The Ostrog Monastery is the largest shrine in Montenegro, which all Orthodox inhabitants of this country believe in and swear by. Ostrog Monastery is located thirty-eight kilometers from Podgorica on the mountain Ostroška greda. It is 30 minutes away from the city of Niksic, and the last eight kilometers of the ride take place on a narrow old road on which no one remembers that a traffic accident occurred. When you turn off the main highway towards the monastery, immediately after a few minutes of driving, you will see the beautiful outlines of the monastery building that clung to the Ostrog beams. From the vertical rock under which the monastery is located, there is a beautiful view of the plain of Bjelopavlica and the valley of the river Zeta.
The monastery is dedicated to Saint Vasilije Ostroški, one of the greatest of our saints, who founded it in the 17th century. He was buried there and proclaimed a saint after his death. The Church of the Holy Cross is located on the upper level of the monastery and its frescoes are adapted to the rocks on which the icon painters painted them. There are lodgings around the church and together they form a monastery that is so united with the surroundings. Between the upper and lower monasteries, there is a church for baptisms, which is of a more recent date and was built of reddish carved stone. Near the lower monastery there are also monastery lodgings where you can stay and spend the night until tomorrow morning liturgy. Ostrog Monastery is one of the most visited monasteries in the Balkans and beyond. Believers of all religions from all parts of the world come to it.
Taxi from Podgorica Airport to Ostrog Monastery is a one-hour trip through the valley of the river Zeta. In the summer and during the great saints, the attendance is huge. Tourists returning from the sea must stop by to visit the miraculous monastery. In the vicinity of the monastery was the ancient town of Ostrog, which served as a border fortification until it was destroyed by the Turks.
This holy place is visited by people from all over the world to seek help from a saint, healing or forgiveness.
