Sveti Stefan is an island in the center of Paštrović. According to the tradition at St. Stephen's church, a fortress was built in 1442, so that the people from the surrounding villages could get away from the turks and pirates. In the fortress one house was built for each of the twelve Pashtro tribes. The fortress was named after the church of St. Stephen, located on the island itself. Sveti Stefan is completely conserved and has retained its medieval appearance that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists traveling through Montenegro.
